Can our minds sabotage our bodies? The answer seems to be YES. The power of the mind-body connection is just beginning to be understood. In fact, we are discovering that our minds could really affect our bodies, more than what we think! A technique called Psychological Kinesiology (PSYCH-K®) has been developed since 1988 by Robert M. Williams, M.A. It seems like he found a way to identify and change subconscious beliefs in order to relieve negative patterns, which would help people heal. Sounds interesting, isn’t it? Shari Montgomery is an advanced PSYCH-K® Facilitator. Let’s learn how Psychological Kinesiology works and how it could help people who suffer from a chronic skin condition.
Could you explain to us what PSYCH-K® is exactly and how it works?
PSYCH-K® addresses the incredibly powerful subconscious mind and the programming that resides there that runs our life. We have two minds – the conscious and the subconscious. Like the iceberg under the water, the subconscious governs approximately 95% of our life, our perceptions, attitudes and behaviour. It’s a vast storehouse of our past experiences and beliefs which controls 99.9999995% of our processing power compared to only 0.000005% in our conscious mind. You can image that when these two minds are not in agreement about something, the subconscious mind wins!
Robert M. Williams, M.A. and Originator of PSYCH-K® enjoyed a successful career as a professional psychotherapist but grew frustrated with its ineffectiveness of producing rapid and lasting change. After many years of studying many ancient and contemporary modalities, Robert developed PSYCH-K® as an effective way to change self-limiting beliefs at the subconscious level of the mind, where nearly all behaviour originates. With a further 20 years of technique development, PSYCH-K® has become a tool on the cutting edge of healing therapies, with certified Facilitators and Instructors all over the world.
Are you saying that a disease could be healed by simply believing?
Science and quantum physics is just starting to scratch the surface of how powerful the mind is and how our perceptions create our reality. Dr. Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., Cellular Biologist has proven that our perceptions do indeed activate our genes, and that we are not victims to random self-activating genes that suddenly develop cancer on their own. He states in his ground-breaking book, ‘The Biology of Belief", “The secret to life is belief, rather than genes, it is our beliefs that control our lives…”
Further studies into the placebo effect are turning the medical establishment on its head. Sugar pills do indeed heal people all the time, because the patient’s mind believes they’re given medicine. Recently, the Discovery Channel ran a program all about the placebo effect, and showed how sufferers of crippling osteoarthritis in their knees were permanently healed from “placebo surgery”, yes fake surgery where only incisions were made while they were under, and no actual surgery was performed. It showed how remarkably, two years later, the people were still healed, running around and playing basketball, simply from the power of their minds believing they had surgery on that day.
Because PSYCH-K® is a direct way to communicate with the subconscious mind to discover limiting subconscious beliefs you’re carrying under the level of your awareness, it offers an incredible opportunity to address those beliefs that you’re ready to change. These beliefs, which can range from “I come from a sick family, so I’ll never be healthy”, or “I’m not lovable” or “I don’t deserve to have wealth”, can have huge impacts on your life. The subconscious mind is the realm that governs the Law of Attraction, and what you’re resonating at that powerful level will be reflected in your life in any variety of ways.
What about skin diseases? Can Psych-K help with psoriasis, eczema, or other chronic skin conditions?
There’s no doubt that there are a variety of factors that cause skin conditions, from hormone imbalances, diet and food allergies, toxic skin products and environmental toxins. But in some cases, these alone may not be enough, and underlying factors need to be addressed also. If you’ve tried everything and nothing works, perhaps it’s time to take a look at what programs your mind is running, or what buried, toxic emotions you may be carrying hat are sabotaging the healing process. A holistic approach is best to address the physical, emotional and mental bodies, and there’s certainly a direct link between our emotional and mental health, and our physical bodies.
It’s proven that stress directly affects the skin. "Eczema and psoriasis in particular are exquisitely sensitive to increases in stress," says Audrey Kunin, MD, a dermatologist (http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/features/mind-skin-health-connection). So take a look at your life. Suppressed, harmful emotions such as deep grief or self hate, or negative self-defeating beliefs that stem from the subconscious do indeed impact the body at all levels, with the skin being the largest organ that is directly reflective of our state of health. Unresolved anger for example can manifest physically in any number of ways.
In referring to Louise Hay or other energy psychologists, emotions and states of mind such as anxiety, fear, anger and disliking the self have direct links to skin problems (and other conditions). Subconscious beliefs, such as “I don’t deserving to be beautiful”, or “I hate myself and I’m ugly”, or psychological reversals such as not actually wanting to heal can completely halt the natural healing process. Addressing underlying beliefs therefore is imperative to the wisdom of the body/mind healing process to take place. If the mind is perpetuating a certain belief that it will never heal, doesn’t want to heal, or doesn’t deserve to heal, that in itself is the starting place to work with, because all other actions of the healing process stem from that. We live life from the inside out.
I’ve seen many conditions, including skin conditions, crop up in my clients at times that they underwent major emotional blows in their lives that caused stress, grief or anger and limiting beliefs. PSYCH-K® allows people to reflect on certain issues of self esteem, self love and acceptance, forgiveness and releasing old defeating thinking patterns that can then open up the road to new perceptions and behaviour.
Is there any scientific evidence that this technique actually works?
There are endless testimonials around the world from happy clients. But the science speaks for itself, and who better to speak it than Dr. Bruce Lipton and Robert Williams?

What is your role as an advanced PSYCH-K® Facilitator?
I’ve been passionate about "whole health" my entire life, and after years as a massage practitioner and learning about nutrition, my interest in health and wellness grew to include mind/body therapies. My role is to help people empower and heal themselves, find their centre and renew their passion for growth and healing so they can live their true potential and fulfill what they came here to do. I really aim to help clients break free of feeling a victim in any way, and help them shift limiting beliefs and perceptions that are holding them back. It’s no fun going through life with your own subconscious mind working against you. Establishing a balance between the subconscious and conscious mind is needed to reach goals and be empowered, and having people at the end of a session go “wow, I feel so much lighter already!” is what I love to see.
What happens during the initial visit?
It’s ideal that a client has an issue they want to work on, some area they’re feeling blocked in their life so it gives us a good place to start. Whether it’s money, relationships, a health issue, or addiction, that can then be the focal point of that session to dig down to the root of underlying beliefs about that particular issue. But having a conscious goal to work with at the start isn’t totally necessary, as I can also facilitate a general Core Belief Balance that reveals how your core beliefs about yourself and life are organized, and re-program any as needed. In every session, I let the subconscious / higher self of the client take the lead, as the wisdom is always in the room, and nothing is done without full permission from their subconscious mind. So often, their higher self knows exactly the direction the session needs to go, even they don’t have conscious knowledge of that.
How long does it usually take to change subconscious beliefs?
It depends on the client and what’s needed for getting really clear about the new supportive belief we’re working on. But once a limiting belief is identified, a typical corrective balance in itself can take as little as 2 minutes. However, PSYCH-K® has a variety of balancing techniques with different times needed with the client either standing, sitting or lying on a massage table. These techniques incorporate whole-brain technology, educational kinesiology and energy focusing. My sessions usually run about 1.5 hours.
Are the results long lasting?
A balance is permanent and will not change, unless a major life event happened that undermines it. Once a balance is complete and programmed into the subconscious, their energetic field is reorganized and settles into its new pattern. Sometimes people can feel dizzy, light, energized, or tired and need a good nap afterward. It’s all unique to the individual, and how much was shifted at the deepest levels.
Also, I like to give people tools to take with them into their life so they can keep up the momentum of self empowerment and more control of their subconscious mind so they can get it working FOR them, not against them. “Actualizing the potential” is important, and deliberate, proactive steps are encouraged for attaining their goal or desired state, with the subconscious mind now in alignment with the conscious, so self-sabotaging no longer happens. And of course, if needed, a follow-up session is available.
You also facilitate the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). What is that?
Where PSYCH-K® deals with the subconscious mind and limiting beliefs, EFT is a meridian-based therapy that works with clearing negative emotions. Akin to “acupuncture for the emotions”, the tapping on certain release points on the energy meridian that runs through our body diffuses the charge of negative emotions. EFT, or energy psychology as it’s called is founded on the premise that any physical or emotional difficulty has a counterpart in the energy system, and can be treated at that level. There’s so much potential for emotional healing with EFT, as not only does it invite people to finally get totally honest about their emotions instead of denying them anymore, but it allows a simple yet powerful technique to free blocked emotions that are stuck. I’ve seen wonderful shifts, and enjoy using it myself!
In particular to skin conditions, a lot of shame, anger or grief can be cleared with EFT, allowing a release of pent up, buried emotions that can block the flow of chi. Freely available for everyone to learn and self-administer, I wanted certification in EFT as an effective tool to help clients who are ready to release toxic emotions they’re carrying. One cannot underestimate the devastating affect on their health, and entire life from carrying buried and suppressed negative emotions that have never been processed and released. For instance, so many women I’ve worked with have never known how to deal with anger, how to healthily express it, and release it out of their bodies. Long standing grief and anger have proven links to cancer, liver and lung problems and a host of other health conditions.
Having negative emotions (energy in motion) isn’t a bad thing, but stuffing them down and repressing them only create blocks in the energy meridian system, potentially creating a whole array of problems.
On the main website for Emotional Freedom Techniques, Eric Robins, MD, states "Some day the medical profession will wake up and realize that unresolved emotional issues are the main cause of 85% of all illnesses. When they do, EFT will be one of their primary healing tools." Do you really believe this technique could heal most conditions and should it be used with PSYCH-K®?
We are so much more than our bodies. Our energy field (aura) which comprises our etheric body, emotional body and mental body, extends way out around us, and the health of our emotions and mental state absolutely must be taken into account for the health and equilibrium of the entire person. Disruptions in the energy field manifest in the physical. The body knows how to heal itself given the right conditions, and yes I do believe EFT can play a key role in assisting the healing process with any condition. Although I, nor any other practitioner encourages substituting the care from their licensed medical professionals with EFT, it is the perfect supplement, and of itself, can often entirely relieve conditions that had emotional causes.
No amount of medical treatment will help someone if they don’t want to live or have given up. No amount of vitamins will heal a condition if the person is living life with suppressed rage, enormous guilt or other toxic emotions. It’s a bit of a loop: our emotions affect our physical health, our physical health affects our emotions, our thoughts determine our feelings/emotions, and our beliefs set the limits to what we can achieve and our possibilities in the world.
I use EFT as a perfect complimentary tool to PSYCH-K® to address the emotional health of clients where needed, and to teach people the techniques to take with them as an empowering tool to continue attending to their own “emotional housekeeping”. It’s really one of the most important things anyone can do on their road to healing of any kind. There’s a reason EFT is now in schools and is being embraced by the medical establishment. Scientific evidence aside, the proof is in the results!
I believe clear skin is a combination of an inside out job: 1) cleaning out what’s inside (physical, emotional toxins and negative programs), and cleaning the outside environment (diet, allergens, products, lifestyle). Whole health means treating the whole person, not just a part.
